Ergonomics includes more than just office chairs. There is a whole industry devoted to proper office ergonomics. After working in the ergonomic industry for a number of years, I started to realize that I am often asked, ”What kinds of products are ergonomic?” In the office environment you can buy ergonomic stools for doctors or factory workers, posture knee chairs for those who work on computers, swopper models to help increase the muscles that promote good posture, and pretty much every chair design comes in an ergonomic model.
Importance of ergonomic office furniture. The standing position is the best way of reducing strain in the back. When you sit, the major part of body weight is shifted to the seat and some weight is shifted to the base, back rest, and armrest also. Therefore, armrests are required to be modifiable and adjustable in height to make certain that the shoulders are not overstressed. It is absolutely necessary that these areas are supported or else sitting in a seat for the entire day can put unnecessary strain on the back causing unbearable pain. Seating available in ergonomic designs is adjustable and highly comfortable. Chairs are comfy and they are at the height that encourages perfect posture of the body, reducing the risk of RSI and other strain injuries and at the same time, reduces eye strain as well. The bottom five vertebrae in the spine needs support to reduce disc pressure. Ergonomic chair provides perfect support to the back. Companies can lessen the threat of liability and lawsuits by employees suffering from strain injuries if workers health and their safety are taken into consideration.
Your skeletal joints need movement, or your joints become stiff from lack of movement. They also need flexibility, meaning they need to be stretched, or they become stiff and sore. And your muscles that surround the skeletal joints need strength, so that they can protect the joint from any serious harm. In other words, take advice from athletes who all use movement, flexibility and strength in their training protocol for fitness. It is something that should be called ’functional fitness’.
Look for an ergonomic chair on wheels that swivels to avoid excess stretching and twisting of your spine and a five-point base won’t tip over when you recline. The tilt mechanism maintains support as you move and recline; it’s best to have your back slightly reclined while seated at your desk. The seat pan is the component of the chair that supports the majority of the user’s weight. Three or four fingers should fit between the seat pan’s front edge and the back of the knees. Tilt adjustments are preferred to allow for a forward working or reclined posture.
Ergonomics therefore is a triangular relationship between the environment, the equipment and the human. There is no set formula; it remains the same in any environment that includes humans / machines, or equipment. My knowledge as an Occupational Therapist and my personal experience with a congenital back disorder and osteoarthritis in both hands, will guide you through correct principles for ergonomic performance and safety.
Ergonomic is the relationship between you, the equipment and the environment for productive activity in daily living. Normally this area is related to the working environment, because of the risks involved in operating machinery. Productive activity is also used in the home, using equipment or machinery, therefore should also be considered as ergonomic. The difference is that the work at home is not paid employment! If you continue to read my articles, it will help you understand that ergonomics is not just about the paid employment environment. It should include activities that we perform daily in the home. The relationships are identical, except there are no financial incentives in the home!
Fabric: Look for ergonomic desk chairs that are easy to maintain their shine. Cloth covered desk chairs might look tempting, as they cost fewer dollars, however, vinyl or leather upholstery will save you from the tedious task of frequent dusting. A robust, permeable, and ventilated material for your desk chair is the best to choose. I would recommend you to look for mesh Pellicle material. It is good or your body. Chair Stability: A swivel chair with five-point base wheels is the perfect choice. It prevents your spine from twisting and stretching excessively. Moreover, there is no risk of tipping over as you recline.
