Being ergonomic in daily living is not about buying the right equipment that you believe will make you ergonomic and therefore safe. It is about learning to train your body to be part of the ergonomic triangle, by using the three key words of movement, flexibility and strength. Although our company sells ’ergonomic’ chairs, you still need to select the right chair for the activity. Then you need to use the three key elements of movement, flexibility and strength in your body, for creating the right needs for your body to be ergonomic. We offer a free Therapeutic Active Living Plan with each chair that will teach you how to create an ergonomic body through simple daily living activities. If you go to a gym, or exercise at home, then you will not need any more than my written advice.
The tilt mechanism maintains support as you move and recline; it’s best to have your back in a slightly reclined position while seated at your desk. Adjustable height and width are absolutely necessary when buying a chair with armrests; the armrest should be made of a soft material and should be at least 2” wide to provide an adequate surface area. It’s important to purchase a chair which uses dense, small-cell foam padding or spring coils to retain its support and cushioning, usually found in higher quality chairs.
Adequate lumbar support in an ergonomic chair is the most crucial element of a backrest. Look for chairs that provide mid-back and upper-back support as well. The seat should always extend at least one inch from either side of the hips for optimum comfort because insufficient hip room can make you sit too far forward and not get enough thigh support.
Make sure that the front part of the seat should slope down slightly and allow a fist size gap between the back of the knees and the front edge of the seat pan to reduce pressure at the back of the thighs.
